Digital Scanning Services

35mm Colour slides and photograph collections digitised. All colour slides and photographs are saved on digital disc and come in jewel cases with personalised front covers and centres. The service also includes the re mastering of colour slides and photographs, once scanned, through colour balancing and colour enhancement, including red-eye removal. Dust removal filters are set at `normal` (medium) during all scanning.

We can also produce digitised images from 35mm and larger format photographic negatives including microfiche, (whether colour or greyscale) and have the images presented on computer disc (CD-Rom) or DVD.

Scanning Resolutions

Digital-Vistas offer scanning resolutions of 400, 800, 1600 and 3200dpi for colour slides and 200, 400 and 800dpi for photographs as well as negatives. All images are saved as `jpeg, jpg` which is a compressed file format and is the standard mode for viewing and printing. Images can be saved using other formats on request. All colour slides digitised at 800dpi fill the computer screen.

Digital images can be spread over separate discs according to subject matter at no extra cost. Scanned images may also be saved on to Digital Media Storage Cards.

It is common knowledge that the modern computer can only handle resolutions of a maximum 3.0 megapixels or 3000dpi. People who download images from high resolution digital cameras only get much larger file sizes and can still only view their photos at 3.0 megapixels on a computer monitor, because that is still all that the computer can handle. Similarly, those who have images scanned at greater resolutions than what we offer get less images on disc and can still only view their images at a maximum 3.0 megapixels.

Customers who do PowerPoint presentations say that scanning at1600dpi is more than sufficient for their needs, when projecting on to a screen. Similarly, the human retina cannot decipher detail greater than that at 1440dpi

Sending Colour Slides

Customers are requested, where possible, to have all colour slides for scanning facing the way that one would normally view them. Whilst the more common mounts usually have `view from this side` printed on them, there are occasionally colour slide mounts which we are unfamiliar with and which give no indication as to what is the front and what is the reverse side.

We would also like to make a suggestion to customers who have difficulty in finding a suitable container in which to send their colour slides. Local shopkeepers throw out tons of cardboard containers every week and will surely have something that will suit the purpose.

All discs are returned first class recorded delivery free of charge.

Customers who wish their colour slides returned are asked to pay half the postage costs for sending them to assist with return postage.

Please feel free to telephone or contact us using the contacts page to discuss your requirements.
